Slum Housing Project

Towards the end of September of 2007 this year, we decided that the time had come for us to act on our dreams and make them a reality. And we embarked on the dream project to build 6000 Homes!!!!!!!!!

In the first phase, we decided to build 140 homes by December of 2007. We hired a whole new employee base to manage this work on the ground, brought in 130 laborers, a few project managers and just jumped into the work. Today, I can look back at that decision and feel proud about it as the 140 homes are ready and people are living in them today. What makes this a rather satisfying experience is the fact that in the areas that we have built these homes, you could not call it a slum by any means today. These homes are sturdy, aesthetically beautiful and well designed.

Each of the homes is 4 sided brick and has a concrete roof done exactly the way as any other house in a posh locality of Delhi would have been built. Each home is built on a solid brick foundation of 4 feet. The home has two rooms, four power points, two fans and an exhaust fan. The homes look aesthetically nice from outside having been painted in two colors – blue and light brown alternately, to give individuality to each home. Each home carries a nice granite name plate outside the home. Having a name plate is a big deal to the Slum Dwellers as till now they did not necessarily have an address. Each of these homes today has taken a legal electric connection and has power in their home.

Where do we go from here now?
We are presently building another 100 homes that should be complete by February 2008. This project is likely to continue for the next few years. Today the need is to raise money for the cause across the world and we are making all our efforts to do that. RRF has recently embarked on a media campaign on a few Asian and American Television channels to get the message out and generate funds. We today need all the help we can get from like minded people who can understand the cause and want to contribute towards making a difference. Finally a $ 1600 donation from you can impart a home to a slum dweller and his/her family (on an average 7 people). The choice is yours to make – are we willing to sacrifice $1600 from our income to provide a permanent home to an under-privileged family? Can we make this donation as our contribution to our society or our country in its march to provide basic necessities to its people? Again the choice is yours to make.

The foundation is committed to the building of these homes and towards that I am setting the ball rolling by making a personal contribution of $2 million towards the building of these homes. I look for your support and guidance towards making this dream of 6000 homes a reality.
